About brighten.video
Most of the videos people care about are filmed in bad light: a birthday cake in a dim kitchen, a band on a dark stage, a child on a winter afternoon, a walk home under street lamps. Phones do their best, but the clip still comes out murky. brighten.video exists to rescue those clips in a minute, in a browser tab, without sending them anywhere.
What it does
- Auto brighten samples a handful of frames, measures where the tones sit and works out how much light to add so the result looks natural rather than washed out.
- Four quick fixes cover the usual culprits: Night video, Dim room, Backlit and Slightly dark, each with a Strength slider.
- More options opens a full grading panel for people who want exact control: exposure in stops, shadows, highlights, midtones, black and white points, contrast, saturation, vibrance and noise reduction, with a histogram and a waveform.
- A split Before and after view, trimming, and the usual export choices of format, size, quality and sound.
How it works
The site is a static web app. Your browser decodes the video with the WebCodecs API and the open-source mediabunny library, and each frame is graded by a small shader running on your graphics chip (or, on devices without WebGL2, the same calculation on the processor). Exposure is applied in linear light, the way a camera gathers it, and bright areas are rolled gently into white instead of being cut off. The preview you watch and the file you save come from the same code, so there are no surprises after export. Unusual formats that your browser can’t open are converted locally with ffmpeg.wasm.
What we promise
- Your footage stays on your device. There is no server that could receive it.
- No watermark, no account, no trial, and no limit on how many videos you fix.
- No advertising. Visits are measured, and you can switch the analytics cookies off with Cookie settings in the footer; the privacy page lists everything that is measured and why.
Honest limits
Brightening can only work with what the camera recorded. Areas that are pure black or blown to pure white hold no detail to recover, and lifting deep shadows always reveals some noise. The tool is built to make the best of that: it protects highlights, keeps the black floor clean and smooths the grain it uncovers. If you’re choosing between apps, the guides for iPhone, Windows and Premiere Pro show how the built-in tools compare, and the night video page covers the hardest case.
